Locals headed to 2015 Canada Winter Games
The Trinity-Conception region will be well represented when the puck drops on the hockey portion of the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George, B.C.
There are six athletes from the region participating in both male and female ice hockey.
Hockey NL announced the female team on Aug. 18 and the male team on Aug. 22.
Abigail Gambin (Dunville), Shailynn Snow (Clarke’s Beach), Brooke Williamson (Bay Roberts) and Kelsey Shute (Harbour Grace) are all members of the province’s under-18 squad earmarked for the Games.
Both Gambin and Snow made the team as underagers. Gambin, who plays out of the Placentia Intertown Minor Hockey Association is 14 years old, while the Bay Arena’s Snow is 13.
“I didn’t know what to say,” said Gambin of her selection.
Helping to guide the four players on the female side will be New Harbour native Jennifer Pollett. She was named as one of the assistant coaches on the staff.
Meanwhile, Mark Barrett (Spaniard’s Bay) and Cameron Simms (Coley’s Point) were named to the provincial male under-16 team.
Both the male and female team will participate in the Atlantic Challenge Cup later this fall, giving teammates and coaches the opportunity to mesh before making the trip across the country for the Games, which run Feb. 13- Mar. 1.
“I think we can do well,” said Shute, 15, of her team’s chances at the Games.
