Lo­cals headed to 2015 Canada Win­ter Games

The Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion re­gion will be well rep­re­sented when the puck drops on the hockey por­tion of the 2015 Canada Win­ter Games in Prince Ge­orge, B.C.

There are six ath­letes from the re­gion par­tic­i­pat­ing in both male and fe­male ice hockey.

Hockey NL an­nounced the fe­male team on Aug. 18 and the male team on Aug. 22.

Abi­gail Gam­bin (Dunville), Shai­lynn Snow (Clarke’s Beach), Brooke Wil­liamson (Bay Roberts) and Kelsey Shute (Har­bour Grace) are all mem­bers of the prov­ince’s un­der-18 squad ear­marked for the Games.

Both Gam­bin and Snow made the team as un­der­agers. Gam­bin, who plays out of the Pla­cen­tia In­ter­town Mi­nor Hockey As­so­ci­a­tion is 14 years old, while the Bay Arena’s Snow is 13.

“I didn’t know what to say,” said Gam­bin of her se­lec­tion.

Help­ing to guide the four play­ers on the fe­male side will be New Har­bour na­tive Jen­nifer Pollett. She was named as one of the as­sis­tant coaches on the staff.

Mean­while, Mark Bar­rett (Spa­niard’s Bay) and Cameron Simms (Co­ley’s Point) were named to the pro­vin­cial male un­der-16 team.

Both the male and fe­male team will par­tic­i­pate in the At­lantic Chal­lenge Cup later this fall, giv­ing team­mates and coaches the op­por­tu­nity to mesh be­fore mak­ing the trip across the coun­try for the Games, which run Feb. 13- Mar. 1.

“I think we can do well,” said Shute, 15, of her team’s chances at the Games.
