The S.W. Moores Memo­rial Sta­dium in Har­bour Grace was a showcase for pageantry on Sept. 21. Not only was there the Teen Miss Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion and Miss New­found­land and Labrador com­pe­ti­tions, but there was also the 2014 run­ning of the Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion

Ju­nior Miss com­pe­ti­tion. Fea­tur­ing a stag­ger­ing 27 con­tes­tants, it was a fierce race

to the crown. In the end, Emily Butt of Car­bon­ear was crowned. The Com­pass was

there and cap­tured th­ese images.

PLA­CEN­TIA TALKS SMOKE ALARMS — Fire Preven­tion Week is Oc­to­ber 5-11, 2014. The theme this year is “Work­ing smoke alarms save lives: Test yours ev­ery month.” Did you know that many peo­ple don’t test their smoke alarms as of­ten as they should? When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast. You need work­ing smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Pla­cen­tia Mayor Wayne Power re­cently joined mem­bers of the Pla­cen­tia Fire Depart­ment to sign the Fire Preven­tion Week procla­ma­tion. Through­out the week mem­bers of the depart­ment will be vis­it­ing schools and other venues to pro­mote fire safety and fire preven­tion.
