Former Davis Elementary on the market
The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District (NLESD) has confirmed a public tender process has been open on the former Davis Elementary in Carbonear.
After its closure in 2013 to accommodate reconfiguration of the school system and the opening of Carbonear Academy, the two-storey structure remained vacant.
For over a year, locals have wondered what was in the cards for this school.
When neighbouring Harbour Grace also lost its elementary school building at the same time, it became the new home of the SPLASH centre. The former SPLASH centre building/St. Paul’s School is being converted into an adult addictions centre.
This is the first announcement regarding Davis since its closure.
A spokesperson for the NLESD told The Compass in an email the school was built on property that was once owned by the United Church of Canada.
“The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District is bound by the Document of Integration to involve with former owners in the disposal process. Negotiations were opened with the church in order to determine how to proceed with the property,” the email said.
The spokesperson also confirmed the school district doesn’t have use for the property and, “has no reason to re-purpose for its own use.”
No information could be obtained on who, what organizations or businesses are interested in the property.
Tenders will be accepted until Oct. 23.
