Ascension, Laval falter in female softball title bids
A pair of female softball teams from the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region recently had their provincial championship dreams dashed.
The Ascension Collegiate Astros and the Laval High Cavaliers participated in the AAAA female softball provincial tournament Oct. 17-18 at the Langdon Critch Memorial Field in Bay Roberts.
The tournament also featured Botwood Collegiate, Stephenville High, St. Kevin’s High in the Goulds and Mount Pearl Senior High.
The Placentia-based Cavaliers were considered one of the favourites to win the whole thing after they captured their regional tournament by defeating the Roncalli Cardinals.
Laval finished the highest amongst the local entries. They fell in the semifinals to the eventual tournament runner-ups Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies by a score of 5-1.
Prior to that, they met the Astros in the first of two quarterfinal matchups on Oct. 18. The Cavaliers downed the hometown team 9-2 to advance.
Both the Astros and Laval had a solid tournament.
Laval started the competition with a tilt against the Huskies that ended in a 10-10 tie.
The Cavaliers then squared off with Botwood Collegiate in the final round robin game. Laval lost 7-3. This meant a third-place finish in the gold division for the team.
The Astros started the tournament on the wrong foot by dropping a 5-2 game to Stephenville High.
However, the team bounced back with a 5-2 victory over St. Kevin’s. This put the team in a three-way tie for first place in the blue division.
Each of Ascension, St. Kevin’s and Stephenville had a win and a loss. Run differential meant St. Kevin’s finished in first, the Astros in second and Stephenville third.
This set up the quarter-final clash with Laval, which Ascension dropped.
