Bernice Hearn, left, Mary McCarthy and Grant Koehler sort through donations to the St. Vincent De Paul Society food bank in Harbour Grace. Koehler, the group’s president, expects its 16 volunteers will prepare close to 130 hampers this Christmas. Those hampers will include a Christmas turkey, veggies, fruit, eggs and bread, among other items. He said the need for help in some families will not disappear in the new year, as many will enter January with little money left to spend on food following the Christmas season. Hearn is the organization’s vice-president, while McCarthy has volunteered with the local food bank for over 20 years.
