Pitcher’s pond manager says course ready for new season
Local golfers looking to hit the links in Whiteway won’t have wait much longer to tee off.
In fact, manager Ray Tuck told The Compass late last week there could be golfers walking the greens at Pitcher’s Pond Golf Course “any day now.”
“We’re playing it by ear,” said Tuck.
Last week, the nine-hole course was mostly devoid of snow, with some still found in the wooded area around the holes and in some of the bunkers. Golf paths are clear and staff is ready to accept golf enthusiasts.

“Some of the golfers have said they’d come and walk around,” said Tuck.
Pitcher’s Pond is traditionally one of the first courses in the province to open, and Tuck said the course is usually up and running by now. However, a dumping of snow in late March buried any chances of an earlier start.
“We like to try and get started ahead of the (St. John’s) courses,” said Tuck.
In the past, low temperatures or a slight drizzle have not deterred golfers from playing the popular course. Golfers have come with weather covers for their carts and, in some extreme cases, they’ve even brought heaters for the carts.
“We have some who do and there are some who won’t golf until the weather is good and they go out and enjoy themselves,” said Tuck.
It is shaping up to be a big summer for the course. Pitcher’s is set to host the provincial junior championships later in the season, amongst a couple of other fairly large tournaments.
For now, the course will have to wait for early birds to arrive.
“I’ve had calls. We’re ready now. I’ve probably had 10-12 calls a day to my house. That’s been going on for the last couple of weeks,” said Tuck. “Any day now that they want to golf, they can.”
