Upper Island Cove byelection

The Compass - - EDITORIAL -

Voters in Upper Island Cove have elected Brian Drover to serve the community as a town councillor. A newcomer to municipal politics, Drover attracted twice as many votes as fellow candidate Valentine ‘Val’ Slaney, winning by a 331-149 margin in last Tuesday’s byelection. Drover has been involved with the Upper Island Cove Parks and Recreation Association, but could have been perceived as an underdog in light of Slaney’s past experience on council. Slaney was an incumbent candidate in the last general election, but fell 17 votes short of tying the sixth-place candidate. Drover was scheduled to be sworn in at the April 27 council meeting.
