Woodland’s musical maestros

The Compass - - EDITORIAL - LITERATURE

Students at Woodland Elementary in Dildo took a couple of minutes to show off what they’ve learned this year in guitar, brass, fiddle and accordian classes with professionals like Kelly Russell, Jason March and Elizabeth Philpott. The school was awarded $6,000 from Vale given to them in three installments which helped them hire musicians to work with the students. Groups of students took their turn on the stage May 8 as they played both traditional and contemporary tunes to the delight of dozens of parents in attendance. During the traditional pieces, it was hard not to tap your feet and clap along with the infectious melodies. Among the performers was a group of guitar players — (l-r) Joshua Legge, Kaden Jones, Spencer Deering and Mason Reid played along with instructor March (not pictured). Meanwhile, a few young accordian players joined Russell. The players are: front (l-r) — Lillian Hefford, Bethany Pitcher and Chelsea Woolfrey-Vokey; back — Gabe Ardis and Kyle Pretty.
