Bay Roberts hotel owner threatens to close

The Compass - - EDITORIAL -

The following letter was originally addressed to Bay Roberts Mayor Philip Wood:

I would like to thank you and your colleagues for the courtesy of your time on Tuesday 9th of June.

It became quickly apparent to me during our meeting that our future as a hospitality provider in Bay Roberts was very bleak indeed. There was little sympathy for our case with respect to the proposed gross over supply of hotel rooms in the town and its impact on our 20 employees.

Likewise Scrunchions Restaurant has always faced headwinds with respect to the various functions and festivals sponsored by the municipality ever since we opened. Little regard has been shown to what would have been a wonderful venue and a unique site for a number of these functions.

You chose instead, church basements, test kitchens, and the legion, among others. It took a few years Mayor, but we now have your message loud and clear.

I would like to be equally clear. To this end, be advised that my plan is to close the hotel and restaurant as soon as it is possible to do so.

We will seek expressions of interest for the development of 10 500-square-foot condominiums and six long term rental units on the site. Subsequently, an application for permit to develop will follow at the earliest opportunity. Other options are being considered of course.

This is a setback for us. We were trying very hard to make Bay Roberts proud of our facility. We tried to offer entertainment, food and service unknown to this community before we opened. Our 20 wonderful staff, Bay Roberts finest, will have to move on and the community is less for this result.

This decision is a pure function of council and staff ’s posture towards us, and an unthinking, almost callous, regard for the implications of 60 new hotel rooms in this town. A concept which you have publicly endorsed with enthusiasm.

You may get your 60 new rooms Mr. Mayor but you will likely lose 42 at the same time, and I doubt you will ever find an investor as willing as we were to provide a special experience to tourists from a dining, entertainment and stayover perspective.

This Mr. Mayor, will be your legacy … not mine. Robert Rowe is the owner of The Bay Roberts Hotel & Scrunchions Restaurant
