Cap­tur­ing Car­bon­ear Days

Car­bon­ear Days has al­ways been about the chil­dren of the area. This year was no ex­cep­tion.

A suc­cess­ful pa­rade in the morn­ing was fol­lowed by ac­tiv­i­ties and the Lit­tle Miss and Mis­ter Car­bon­ear pageant at Paddy’s Gar­den.

The weather co-op­er­ated and the sun beamed down on all those in at­ten­dance.

Here are some of the high­lights from the events in Car­bon­ear on Mon­day, Aug. 3.

PRINCE AND PRINCESS — Ben Clarke (right) spent weeks pre­par­ing his Lit­tle Mis­ter Car­bon­ear cos­tume, which he proudly pa­raded down Wa­ter Street wear­ing dur­ing the Car­bon­ear Day fes­tiv­i­ties. He was joined by his grand­mother Max­ine Clarke, who played the part of Miss Car­bon­ear. Ben won the best cos­tume award for his en­try in the pa­rade.

BEST DEC­O­RATED CAR — San­dra Smith (right) and Deb­bie Reynolds pose in front of their en­try in the Car­bon­ear Days pa­rade Mon­day, Aug. 3. San­dra, who is a mem­ber of the Tri Con Gen­tle Giants, op­er­ates her own re­cy­cling busi­ness. She won the best car cat­e­gory.

A ROYAL WAVE — Miss Teen Trin­ity Conception Kylie Jack­son of South Dildo and Emily Butt, Trin­ity Conception Ju­nior Miss, from Har­bour Grace, rode in a Mus­tang con­vert­ible in the Car­bon­ear Days pa­rade on Mon­day, Aug. 3.

OR­GANIC AD­DI­TION — St. Pa­trick’s Or­ganic Com­mu­nity Gar­den en­tered the pa­rade this year, push­ing wheel­bar­rows with scare­scrows in them and car­ry­ing a large ban­ner. The mem­bers of the group main­tain their own gar­den beds grow­ing all sorts of de­li­cious crops.

KEEP­ING HISTORY ALIVE — The hus­band and wife duo of Paul (right) and Chris­tine Bald­win were Cap­tain Gil­bert Pike and Princess Sheila NaGeira re­spec­tively in the Car­bon­ear Days pa­rade on Mon­day, Aug. 3 on Wa­ter Street. Pike was a pi­rate and NaGeira was a princess who fell in love with him, ac­cord­ing to a story that is told to many visi­tors to the area.

GO­ING FOR A RAZZ — Ray Fitzger­ald dec­o­rated and hopped on his quad to take part in the Car­bon­ear Days pa­rade on Mon­day, Aug. 3. The mem­ber of St. Pa­trick’s Or­ganic Com­mu­nity Gar­dens brought along a (stuffed) buddy to ride with him.
