CBN soccer gold
The CBN minor soccer under16 male team captured the gold medal in the B division of the Soccer NL under-16 mega tournament on home soil. The Shannons defeated Gander 3-0 in the final match held at the Carbonear Recreation Complex. It wasn’t the only CBN gold as the CBN Lightning took gold in the C division.
A pair of soccer teams from Conception Bay North are basking in championship glory this week.
This is after under-16 male teams from CBN minor soccer and the CBN Lightning captured provincial titles during the under16 male mega tournament jointly held in Harbour Grace and Carbonear Aug. 21-23.
CBN minor soccer Shannons— which is based in the host communities — blanked Gander 3-0 to take the mega B championship in a match held at the Carbonear Recreation Complex on Sunday morning.
CBN got goals from Matthew Hoyles and Cody Vaters (2), while riding a strong defensive system to the provincial title.
The victory capped an impressive tournament for the hometown team.
The group posted a record of three wins and one loss. They got thing started with a 6-2 victory over the Lightning, which was followed by a tough 2-1 loss to St. Pierre’s ASIA.
On Day 2 of the tourney, CBN got back to its winning ways with a 7-1 victory over the Fieldians of St. John’s and a 4-1 defeat of Gander.
Meanwhile, the Lightning got goals from Darcy Dawe and Blake Kenny en route to 2-0 victory over Exploits in the final of mega C division.
The provincial title was a long time coming for the Lightning, who fell painstakingly short in the championship of the C division final last summer.
The Bay Roberts-based club followed the loss to CBN with a 50 defeat to ASIA on Friday. That was followed by a 2-1 loss to Exploits and a 5-0 shutout of Mount Pearl ahead of the championship game.
The under-16 female mega tournament was also held in the Carbonear-Harbour Grace region, marking the first time both the male and female tournaments were held in the same community at the same time.
While the Lightning did not have a team registered in the tournament, the host CBN ladies went winless in four attempts.
