Carbonear softball final underway
Butts Esso took a 2-0 series lead last week in the best-of-seven final series of the Carbonear Slow Pitch Softball League. Playing against Western Petroleum, who earlier that week completed a four-game series sweep in the semi-final series with East Coast Concrete, Butts won the first and second games of the finals last Wednesday. Games three and four were scheduled to take place Monday, Sept. 14. In the first game, Butts won dramatically in the seventh inning by scoring a pair of runs in a 10-9 victory over Western. Steven King had a hot bat for the winners, smacking four hits in the game. He also combined with Phil Hurley to earn the win from the mound, with Sam White suffering the loss for Western. In game two, Butts won in a much more decisive fashion, pummeling Western 12-3. Jason Power collected four hits for the winners, and King and Hurley once again pitched the team to victory. White was the losing pitcher in game two. Last Tuesday, Western finished off East Coast Concrete convincingly in games three and four. The team won game three by a score of 9-6, with Nick Rossiter and Trevor Parsons collecting three hits apiece. White tossed the pitching win, while Gerard Griffin took the loss.
In game four, Mat Davis, Roy Flight, Rossiter, Dan Keats, Kenny Hunt, Jeff King and White had two hits each in an 11-8 win over East Coast Concrete. White was Western’s winning pitcher, with Griffin on the losing end for East Coast Concrete.
