Car­bon­ear soft­ball fi­nal un­der­way

Butts Esso took a 2-0 se­ries lead last week in the best-of-seven fi­nal se­ries of the Car­bon­ear Slow Pitch Soft­ball League. Play­ing against Western Petroleum, who ear­lier that week com­pleted a four-game se­ries sweep in the semi-fi­nal se­ries with East Coast Con­crete, Butts won the first and sec­ond games of the fi­nals last Wed­nes­day. Games three and four were sched­uled to take place Mon­day, Sept. 14. In the first game, Butts won dra­mat­i­cally in the sev­enth in­ning by scor­ing a pair of runs in a 10-9 vic­tory over Western. Steven King had a hot bat for the win­ners, smack­ing four hits in the game. He also com­bined with Phil Hur­ley to earn the win from the mound, with Sam White suf­fer­ing the loss for Western. In game two, Butts won in a much more decisive fash­ion, pum­mel­ing Western 12-3. Jason Power col­lected four hits for the win­ners, and King and Hur­ley once again pitched the team to vic­tory. White was the los­ing pitcher in game two. Last Tues­day, Western fin­ished off East Coast Con­crete con­vinc­ingly in games three and four. The team won game three by a score of 9-6, with Nick Ros­siter and Trevor Par­sons col­lect­ing three hits apiece. White tossed the pitch­ing win, while Ger­ard Grif­fin took the loss.

In game four, Mat Davis, Roy Flight, Ros­siter, Dan Keats, Kenny Hunt, Jeff King and White had two hits each in an 11-8 win over East Coast Con­crete. White was Western’s win­ning pitcher, with Grif­fin on the los­ing end for East Coast Con­crete.
