Take me out to the ball game

Road trips are best experienced with a group of close friends. It makes the tunes sweeter and the stories larger. If you’re baseball fan, it is even better when the road trip leads to watching your favourite team against one of their divisional rivals.

That’s exactly what a group of friends from the Conception Bay North region did Labour Day weekend when they drove from Saint John, N.B., to Boston for a weekend set between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox.

Garrett Mercer, Aaron Stephenson, Andy Bishop, Jeremy Parsons and Daniel Parsons met up in Saint John before heading south. Mercer moved to the city some months ago. Stephenson lives in Alberta and flew in for the trip, while the other three took a plane to Halifax before heading to Saint John by car.

You could call it an Atlantic Canadian version of Stand By Me, but with a ball game at the end instead of dead body.

“Most of the drive, we were just catching up,” said Bishop. “We hadn’t seen each other in awhile.”
