Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion teams rep­re­sent

As­cen­sion grabs cham­pi­onship ban­ner at Vol­leyFest

It was no trou­ble find­ing a team from the Trin­ity-Con­cep­tion re­gion on the floor some­where in St. John’s for Vol­leyFest 2015.

A to­tal of 14 teams from schools in Bay Roberts, Blake­town and Old Per­li­can par­tic­i­pated in the highly-an­tic­i­pated event.

Vol­leyFest is an an­nual vol­ley­ball ex­trav­a­ganza, which takes place in the St. John’s re­gion over the course of one week­end. This year’s edi­tion saw 140 teams tak­ing part in 532 matches over two days.

As­cen­sion Col­le­giate’s se­nior male team had the strong­est show­ing. The team cap­tured the Tier II cham­pi­onship ban­ner af­ter de­feat­ing Holy Heart (2522, 25-17) in the fi­nal.

In the semi­fi­nals of the event, the Astros de­feated Queen El­iz­a­beth in ex­tra sets (25-19, 12-25 and 17-15).

The team also de­feated Mount Pearl Se­nior High (25-11, 25-15) and Pear­son Academy (25-16, 11-25 and 15-4) en route to the ti­tle. As­cen­sion dropped its first three matches of the tour­ney to Gan­der Col­le­giate, Queen El­iz­a­beth and Holy Heart.

Old Per­li­can’s Bac­calieu Col­le­giate saw their se­nior male team reach the semi­fi­nals of the se­nior high male B Tier II divi­sion. Bac­calieu dropped the match to New World Is­land Academy by scores of 25-20 and 25-19.

Prior to that, the team up­ended Holy Heart II 25-17 and 25-18 in the quar­ters. In the round robin por­tion, Bac­calieu posted a record of two wins (South West Arm, O’Donel High) and a loss (Gil Me­mo­rial).

In the se­nior high male B tour­ney, the As­cen­sion ju­nior team posted a record of a win (O’Donel High) and four losses (Lake­wood Academy, Tri­cen­tia Academy, Dis­cov­ery Col­le­giate and Ran­dom Is­land Academy).

In the Grade 9 male tour­ney, Bac­calieu Col­le­giate again made it to the semi­fi­nal of the tier II divi­sion.

How­ever, it was the same re­sult for the school as they dropped the match to Ran­dom Is­land Academy (25-21, 25-22).

In the quar­ters, the team downed St. Paul’s Ju­nior High in straight sets 25-18, 25-19.

Prior to that, Bac­calieu posted a record of two wins (Clarenville Mid­dle School, Ron­calli High School) and two losses (McDon­ald Drive Ju­nior High and Cor­ner Brook In­ter­me­di­ate).

Bay Roberts’ Amal­ga­mated Academy fell in the semi­fi­nal of the Grade 8 male tour­na­ment. They lost to Clarenville Mid­dle School (Moulton) 25-15 and 2517.

In the round robin por­tion of the tour­na­ment, Amal­ga­mated posted a record of three wins (MacDon­ald Drive Ju­nior High, Clarenville Mid­dle School (Moulton) and Cor­ner Brook In­ter­me­di­ate) and one loss (Clarenville Mid­dle School (Snook)).

On the fe­male side

At the Grade 8 fe­male tour­na­ment, Amal­ga­mated had two teams test­ing them­selves against some stern com­pe­ti­tion.

Amal­ga­mated Red fin­ished with a record of one win (Ran­dom Is­land Academy) and four losses (Mount Pearl In­ter­me­di­ate, Cor­ner Book In­ter­me­di­ate, St. Pe­ter’s Ju­nior High and McDon­ald Drive Ju­nior High (Way)).

Mean­while, Amal­ga­mated Black posted a record of two wins (Frank Roberts Ju­nior High Yel­low and Ex­ploits Val­ley In­ter­me­di­ate) and three losses (Frank Roberts Ju­nior High Blue, Cor­ner Brook In­ter­me­di­ate and McDon­ald Drive Ju­nior High (Way)).

Bac­calieu Col­le­giate fell to Tri­cen­tia in the quar­ters of the Grade 9 fe­male divi­sion to end their run in the tour­ney. Prior to that, they posted a record of two wins and two losses.

Amal­ga­mated was also in the Grade 9 tour­ney. They fin­ished with­out a vic­tory.

In the se­nior high C divi­sion, four teams from this re­gion took part. Bac­calieu made it to the semi­fi­nals of the Tier 1 por­tion but fell to Gon­zaga.

Lead­ing up to that point, the team was 5-0.

The Cres­cent Col­le­giate Grade 10 squad fin­ished 0-4. The Cres­cent Col­le­giate ju­nior team went 1-3, while As­cen­sion fin­ished 0-3.

At the se­nior high fe­male B level, As­cen­sion fin­ished 0-4.
