Trinity-Conception teams represent
Ascension grabs championship banner at VolleyFest
It was no trouble finding a team from the Trinity-Conception region on the floor somewhere in St. John’s for VolleyFest 2015.
A total of 14 teams from schools in Bay Roberts, Blaketown and Old Perlican participated in the highly-anticipated event.
VolleyFest is an annual volleyball extravaganza, which takes place in the St. John’s region over the course of one weekend. This year’s edition saw 140 teams taking part in 532 matches over two days.
Ascension Collegiate’s senior male team had the strongest showing. The team captured the Tier II championship banner after defeating Holy Heart (2522, 25-17) in the final.
In the semifinals of the event, the Astros defeated Queen Elizabeth in extra sets (25-19, 12-25 and 17-15).
The team also defeated Mount Pearl Senior High (25-11, 25-15) and Pearson Academy (25-16, 11-25 and 15-4) en route to the title. Ascension dropped its first three matches of the tourney to Gander Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth and Holy Heart.
Old Perlican’s Baccalieu Collegiate saw their senior male team reach the semifinals of the senior high male B Tier II division. Baccalieu dropped the match to New World Island Academy by scores of 25-20 and 25-19.
Prior to that, the team upended Holy Heart II 25-17 and 25-18 in the quarters. In the round robin portion, Baccalieu posted a record of two wins (South West Arm, O’Donel High) and a loss (Gil Memorial).
In the senior high male B tourney, the Ascension junior team posted a record of a win (O’Donel High) and four losses (Lakewood Academy, Tricentia Academy, Discovery Collegiate and Random Island Academy).
In the Grade 9 male tourney, Baccalieu Collegiate again made it to the semifinal of the tier II division.
However, it was the same result for the school as they dropped the match to Random Island Academy (25-21, 25-22).
In the quarters, the team downed St. Paul’s Junior High in straight sets 25-18, 25-19.
Prior to that, Baccalieu posted a record of two wins (Clarenville Middle School, Roncalli High School) and two losses (McDonald Drive Junior High and Corner Brook Intermediate).
Bay Roberts’ Amalgamated Academy fell in the semifinal of the Grade 8 male tournament. They lost to Clarenville Middle School (Moulton) 25-15 and 2517.
In the round robin portion of the tournament, Amalgamated posted a record of three wins (MacDonald Drive Junior High, Clarenville Middle School (Moulton) and Corner Brook Intermediate) and one loss (Clarenville Middle School (Snook)).
On the female side
At the Grade 8 female tournament, Amalgamated had two teams testing themselves against some stern competition.
Amalgamated Red finished with a record of one win (Random Island Academy) and four losses (Mount Pearl Intermediate, Corner Book Intermediate, St. Peter’s Junior High and McDonald Drive Junior High (Way)).
Meanwhile, Amalgamated Black posted a record of two wins (Frank Roberts Junior High Yellow and Exploits Valley Intermediate) and three losses (Frank Roberts Junior High Blue, Corner Brook Intermediate and McDonald Drive Junior High (Way)).
Baccalieu Collegiate fell to Tricentia in the quarters of the Grade 9 female division to end their run in the tourney. Prior to that, they posted a record of two wins and two losses.
Amalgamated was also in the Grade 9 tourney. They finished without a victory.
In the senior high C division, four teams from this region took part. Baccalieu made it to the semifinals of the Tier 1 portion but fell to Gonzaga.
Leading up to that point, the team was 5-0.
The Crescent Collegiate Grade 10 squad finished 0-4. The Crescent Collegiate junior team went 1-3, while Ascension finished 0-3.
At the senior high female B level, Ascension finished 0-4.
