Medals galore for Poseidon
Sarah Forward earns medals in five events
The Poseidon Swims Club sent 15 swimmers to a meet earlier this month in Gander, and those who got in the pool posted some good times. Many managed to earn medals competing against other swimmers from across the province.
Poseidon Swim Club competitors medalled in multiple events at a recent meet in Gander.
Leading the way for the Carbonear-based swim club was Sarah Forward. Competing in the 13-14 age category, the Salmon Cove native earned medals in five events.
She claimed three silvers (100metre freestyle, 200-m breaststroke and 200-m individual medley) and two bronze (200-m freestyle and 400-m freestyle).
Alex Neil and Rylee Moores also left the meet with some good results, as each girl claimed three medals.
Neil placed first in the 50-m butterfly event for the 13-14 age category, second in the 100-m butterfly and third in the 200-m individual medley.
Competing in the 11-12 age group, Moores earned a silver in the 100-m butterfly and two bronze medals in the 200-m freestyle and 200-m individual medley.
Noah Coombs and Mackenzie Sutton each earned a pair of medals in Gander. Coombs placed second in the 100-m backstroke for 13-14 boys and third in the 100-m individual medley.
Sutton was first in 200-m freestyle for 10-and-under girls and third in 200-m individual medley, and also had three fourth-place finishes.
Several other swimmers claimed medals:
• Ethan Kavanagh-Day (M 1314: 3rd in 200-m breaststroke)
• Jorja Bennett (F 11-12: 3rd in 100-m individual medley)
• Courtney Budden (F 13-14: 3rd in 100-m freestyle)
• Sarah Burt (F 10-and-under: 2nd in 100-m breaststroke)
• Drew Forward (F 15-andover: 1st in 400-m freestyle)
• Megan Smith (F 11-12: 3rd in 100-m backstroke)
Alaina King came close to medalling in the female 11-12 age category, settling for fourth place in the 200-m breaststroke.
Several swimmers will now prepare for an invitational meet next month in Pointe-Claire, Quebec.
The team currently has 22 competitive swimmers and nine pre-competitives.
Swimmers must achieve a Level 6 certification or equivalent in order to become a member of the club.
