Poseidon earns medals at west coast swim meet
The Poseidon Swim Club sent a small group to last month’s invitational meet in Corner Brook, but that didn’t prevent the team from returning home with medals.
Sarah Forward led the way for the Carbonear-based club, swimming to podium finishes in all six of her races. Competing in the 13-14 age group, Forward finished first in 400-metre freestyle and 200-m individual medley, second in 400-m individual medley, and third in 50m freestyle, 100-m breaststroke and 200-m breaststroke.
Sarah’s sister Drew Forward also did well, earning medals in four 15-and-over female events. Drew was first in 200-m backstroke, second in the 200-m and 800-m freestyle events, and third in 100-m freestyle. She just missed out on medalling in 50-m and 100-m backstroke, finishing fourth in both events.
In the male 13-14 category, Noah Coombs and Ethan Kavanagh-Day both achieved topsix results in a few events. Coombs, who earned personal best times in five of his six events, was fourth in 50-m and 200-m backstroke and 200-m individual medley, and finished sixth in 100-m backstroke. Kavanagh-Day finished fourth in 50-m breaststroke and fifth in both 100-m and 200-m breaststroke.
Poseidon swimmers will next compete Feb. 12-14 at the Swimming Newfoundland and Labrador Short Course Championships in Mount Pearl.
