Carbonear Collegiate earns another hoops banner
The Carbonear Collegiate Lady Sentinels basketball team continued their winning ways this month.
The female team captured the championship of the second annual Valentine’s Day Classic hosted by Prince of Wales Collegiate in St. John’s Feb. 12-14.
Carbonear put together a complete team effort in the gold medal match as they glided to an 82-65 victory over the host Cavaliers.
The victory meant the Sentinels exacted a sliver of revenge against PWC for an earlier loss that weekend.
That came in the tournament opener for both teams. The Cavaliers squeaked out a 56-53 victory in that one.
The Sentinels got back to their winning ways with a 66-52 win over the Celtics club team. Their victory plus a Celtics victory over PWC resulted in a threeway tie for first place in their division. When the dust had settled, Carbonear found themselves in on top and awaiting the winner of the Celtics-Corner Brook Regional High winner.
In the semifinals, Carbonear again bested Celtics, this time by an eight-point margin, 59-51.
Next for the Sentinels will be AAAA Tier II regional playdowns with Ascension Collegiate from Bay Roberts. Then, they’ll be hosting the AAAA Tier II provincial tournament March 11-13. It’s a tournament they’ve won the past two seasons.
