Amalgamated Academy snags gold
The Amalgamated Academy Jaguars used a high-powered offence to grab the gold medal at the recent Frank Roberts Junior High hockey tournament held in CBS. The Bay Roberts-based team defeated McDonald Drive Junior High in the final.
Depth is a key component to any championship team.
Having the ability to roll out three or four solid lines when your opponent only has one or two is something every coach dreams about. It makes their job easier and wreaks havoc on the opposing teams confidence.
“We were in a situation where we had three solid lines,” said Amalgamated Academy hockey coach Geoff Seymour. “Depth was definitely a strength for us.”
Featuring a team with a solid mixture of Tri Pen Ice AAA and Bay Arena bantam A players, the Bay Roberts-based Jaguars proved to be too much for their opposition.
From forwards to defence, Amalgamated were able to overwhelm their opponents with an attack that featured some of the best junior high players on the Avalon.
The Jaguars used that depth to propel them to the championship of the 13th annual Frank Roberts Junior High hockey tournament. Held at the Conception Bay South Stadium in Kelligrews, Amalgamated soundly thumped the McDonald Drive Junior High Grizzlies from St. John’s 8-1 in the tier I final on April 24.
“The players were ready to go for (the championship),” said Seymour. “Puck possession and forechecking, we were ready.”
The Jaguars got out to a good start. The team blanked Torbay’s Holy Trinity 8-0 and followed that up with a 4-2 victory over St. Kevin’s Junior High in the Goulds.
They dropped a tight 4-2 deci- sion to McDonald Drive Junior High before rebounding with a 10-0 ravaging of Leary’s Brook. The Jaguars finished the round robin with a 4-1 victory over St. Peter’s Junior High.
Their 4-1 record was good enough to land them in tier I of the 13-team tournament.
In the semifinals, Amalgamated registered a 5-1 win over Mount Pearl Intermediate.
“It’s a very good tournament,” said Seymour.
Over the seven games, the Jaguars produced an incredible 39 goals for, while surrendering just nine in total.
Its remarkable considering the team had very little practice time given the busy schedules of the players.
“They came together quickly,” said Seymour.
It was the second time Amalgamated entered a team in the long running tournament. Last year, the team was dropped in the quarterfinals.
This year, they wanted to make amends for that hiccup.
“The players were highly motivated to win this year,” said Seymour. “It’s nice to get a bit of redemption.”
Motivation is a powerful thing for players. The Amalgamated team was hungry to get the win over McDonald Junior High.
“When you’ve got kids asking you if they can throw their gloves in the air, you know they’re motivated to win,” said Seymour.
