Ascension celebrates another graduating class
The latest graduating class of Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts took their turn walking across the stage on May 13.
Undaunted by the superstition surrounding Friday the 13th, graduates got dolled up — with some using the Great Gatsby theme as inspiration — and celebrated the upcoming conclusion to their high school careers.
There were thank yous delivered to teachers, parents and fellow graduates from a variety of speakers. In what could be the first time in the school’s history, Ascension had co-valedictorians.
Generally chosen based on grade average, this year’s pair — Brady Ryan and Mackenzie Collins — each posted an average of 99.2 per cent.
As always, there were tears, laughs and some tall tales told between graduates and parents as they recounted the years they’ve spent together.
The Compass was there and captured these images.

Graduation is about celebrating with lifelong schoolmates. There were a couple amongst this group who have been together for years. They are, from left, Sean Crane, Joey Hutchings, Travis Collins, Hailey Caravan, Chad Mercer, Tyler Lundrigan and Allie Clarke.
