Poseidon swimmers cap off season at long course championships
Poseidon finished its season strong, with just about everyone finishing with some personalbest times and a few swimmers medalling at the Swim Newfoundland and Labrador Long Course Championships.
The Carbonear-based club sent nine young competitors to the meet in St. John’s June 3-5. Leading the way for Poseidon was Allison Somers.
The swimmer from Carbonear claimed five bronze medals in the 15-and-over age category and was the female top achiever at varsity level.
Among those results, she tied for third in the final of the 100metre freestyle event with St. John’s Legends swimmer Emily Ford. Both finished with a time of 1:04.51.
In the female 13-14 age category, Alex Neil of Bay Roberts earned a silver medal in 50-m butterfly, taking one-and-a-half seconds off her previous personal-best with a time of 31.86.
She also qualified for three other finals, finishing fourth in 200-m butterfly and seventh in both 100-m butterfly and 200-m individual medley.
In 12-and-under female 400-m freestyle, Mackenzie Sutton captured a bronze medal, finishing less than two seconds behind the silver medalist with a time of 5:51.16. She took a full minute off her previous personal-best time in that event.
Elsewhere, she qualified for the finals in 400-m individual medley (sixth) and 200-m backstroke (seventh).
Rylee Moores made it to four finals in female 12-and-under and swam personal-best times in all six of her events. She was fifth in 100-m butterfly, sixth in 100-m freestyle, seventh in 200-m free- style and eighth in 50-m butterfly.
Sarah Forward of Salmon Cove finished fourth in female 13-14 400-m individual medley, sixth in 400-m freestyle and eighth in 50-m breaststroke.
Noah Coombs was fifth in the final for male 13-14 200-m back- stroke, and Courtney Budden and Drew Forward qualified for multiple B-finals at the meet in St. John’s.
The long course championships is the last major meet of the season, though some Poseidon members will hope to qualify for the team representing the Avalon region at the 2016 Summer Games in Conception Bay South.
The swimming competition runs during week two of the event, Aug. 17-21.
