Interest was high for a joint federal and provincial funding announcement in Bay Roberts Thursday afternoon.

A new bilateral agreement will make infrastructure funding available to shovel-ready projects across the province. It makes more than $150 million in combined funding available to municipalities in this province to support water and wastewater, as well as public transit infrastructure projects.

The federal government is providing $75 million and the province $44 million, with municipalities on the hook for the remaining $31 million.

While the public transit portion of the funding doesn’t directly apply to the Trinity-Conception-Placentia region, there are plenty of communities who will reap the benefits of the wastewater funding. To be exact, 13 will receive a portion of the $140 million being made available for water and sewer system improvements.

The communities receiving funding are from all corners of the region. The towns include Bay Roberts, Dildo, Freshwater, Bay de Verde, Carbonear, Clarke’s Beach, Heart’s Content, New Perlican, Old Perlican, Placentia, South River, Spaniard’s Bay and Victoria.

Of the federal money announced, these communities are getting just over $6.9 million of the available money. Additional funding comes from the provincial government and the municipalities themselves.

It’ll go into projects for water supply upgrades, sewer expansions, lift station upgrades and water distribution upgrades, amongst other projects.

“This agreement will allow communities across Newfoundland and Labrador to grow and prosper by providing them with funds to help address their specific priorities,” said Minister of Public Services and Procurement Judy Foote. “It is only when agreements like these are signed that money can flow.”

She was there on behalf of Amarjeet Sohi, the minister of infrastructure and communities.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Dwight Ball was on hand for the signing of the agreement. He said the province’s share of the funding is “part of our commitment to delivering safe, reliable drinking water to residents and properly managing wastewater and storm water systems.”

“This is a part of today’s important joint announcement that further demonstrates what can be achieved when federal, provincial and municipal governments work together to improve the lives of our people and their communities,” said Ball.

The funding announcement was good news for Placentia Mayor Wayne Power Jr. He said the money will go towards the regionalization of the town’s water supply and sewer system upgrades.

“We’re very pleased with (the announcement),” said Power. “It’s going to be a great advancement for our priority plans and capital works.”
