A Gull Island couple’s winning scratch has left them in an enviable position — debt-free.

Glenda and Todd Oliver won the top prize of $77,777 on a Emerald 7 Scratch’N Win ticket.

“We were able to pay off all we owe, and it is going to be so nice to own our pay cheques,” Glenda said in an Atlantic Lottery news release.

Bursey’s Quick Way in Lower Island Cove sold the winning ticket, entitling the business to a one per cent seller’s prize. It was Todd who purchased the winning ticket.

“When I saw the numbers lining up, I knew I’d won something, and figured it was a free ticket,” Todd recalled, “Instead it’s a different kinds of free - debt-free - and we will take that.”

Glenda intends to purchase a new vehicle to help her navigate the daily commute from Gull Island to Carbonear for work.

“I bought the ticket, yes, but just like the lottery commercial says, she gets half,” Todd joked. “It’s only fair, right? She shares half the bills so we share the winnings.”
