Al­leged street racer in fa­tal crash de­nied bail

Ac­cused of caus­ing Han­nah Thorne’s death in New Har­bour Bar­rens ac­ci­dent

A Bay Roberts man ac­cused of tak­ing part in a street race that led to a fa­tal head-on col­li­sion was de­nied bail in Har­bour Grace Pro­vin­cial Court Fri­day.

Brian Robert King, 30, was picked up ear­lier in the week for al­legedly breach­ing con­di­tions of his re­lease.

King and 29-year-old Steven Ryan Mercer of Up­per Is­land Cove were charged last month with crim­i­nal neg­li­gence in the op­er­a­tion of a mo­tor ve­hi­cle caus­ing death, crim­i­nal neg­li­gence in the op­er­a­tion of a mo­tor ve­hi­cle caus­ing bod­ily harm, street rac­ing caus­ing death, street rac­ing caus­ing bod­ily harm and breach of pro­ba­tion.

Han­nah Thorne of New Har­bour was killed in a head-on col­li­sion with King’s ve­hi­cle on July 7. The 18-year-old’s grand­mother, who was driv­ing their ve­hi­cle, was se­ri­ously in­jured in the col­li­sion. Mercer was al­legedly rac­ing King in an­other ve­hi­cle.

King and Mercer are due back in court Oct. 5.
