Alleged street racer in fatal crash denied bail
Accused of causing Hannah Thorne’s death in New Harbour Barrens accident
A Bay Roberts man accused of taking part in a street race that led to a fatal head-on collision was denied bail in Harbour Grace Provincial Court Friday.
Brian Robert King, 30, was picked up earlier in the week for allegedly breaching conditions of his release.
King and 29-year-old Steven Ryan Mercer of Upper Island Cove were charged last month with criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle causing death, criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, street racing causing death, street racing causing bodily harm and breach of probation.
Hannah Thorne of New Harbour was killed in a head-on collision with King’s vehicle on July 7. The 18-year-old’s grandmother, who was driving their vehicle, was seriously injured in the collision. Mercer was allegedly racing King in another vehicle.
King and Mercer are due back in court Oct. 5.
