Former town manager pleads guilty in Placentia fraud case
A former employee accused of defrauding the Town of Placentia has pleaded guilty.
Margaret Anne Hatfield, 59, was charged last year with 20 counts of fraud and four counts of forgery. A guilty plea was entered Wednesday at the courthouse in Placentia on an amended fraud charge. The amended charge covered an extended period of time.
An employee of the town since 1976, Hatfield most recently served as its manager of town affairs. She was also a former tourism and heritage director for the town.
The original charges covered a period beginning in December 2010. Hatfield last worked for the town in 2014, the same year the municipality first filed a complaint with police.
Defence counsel for Hatfield requested that a pre-sentencing report be prepared. The case will be called in Harbour Grace Provincial Court Feb. 6, 2017. Hatfield is not in custody.
