For­mer town man­ager pleads guilty in Pla­cen­tia fraud case

A for­mer em­ployee ac­cused of de­fraud­ing the Town of Pla­cen­tia has pleaded guilty.

Mar­garet Anne Hat­field, 59, was charged last year with 20 counts of fraud and four counts of forgery. A guilty plea was en­tered Wed­nes­day at the court­house in Pla­cen­tia on an amended fraud charge. The amended charge cov­ered an ex­tended pe­riod of time.

An em­ployee of the town since 1976, Hat­field most re­cently served as its man­ager of town af­fairs. She was also a for­mer tourism and her­itage direc­tor for the town.

The orig­i­nal charges cov­ered a pe­riod be­gin­ning in De­cem­ber 2010. Hat­field last worked for the town in 2014, the same year the mu­nic­i­pal­ity first filed a com­plaint with po­lice.

De­fence coun­sel for Hat­field re­quested that a pre-sen­tenc­ing re­port be pre­pared. The case will be called in Har­bour Grace Pro­vin­cial Court Feb. 6, 2017. Hat­field is not in cus­tody.
