The Compass - - EDITORIAL -

As more people in our community begin to question where their food comes from and how it is produced, it has become apparent how little the general population knows about agriculture.

There are many times that I have heard people in the community speak, or share on social media, things about agriculture that were simply not true.

However, can anyone really blame members of our community for not knowing a whole lot about agriculture? Most people in the CBN region did not grow up around it, so they simply don’t know anything about it.

How can we expect a population to know the difference between facts and misinformation, if they were never educated on the subject at any point in their lives?

This problem should be, and needs to be, tackled in the education system. An intensive agriculture curriculum needs to become mandatory in each school district in Newfoundland. The curriculum should educate students on each different agricultural sector, include presentations by industry professionals, and also bring the students on field trips to local farms. That way, students can see for themselves the things that they have learned about in the classroom, and better shape their own understanding about what agriculture looks like.

We need a society that makes factbased opinions and decisions about their food, instead of making choices based off of fear. At least then, whether it be about something such as GMOs, organic foods or animal welfare, individuals would be able to make informed choices.

There is a huge gap between agriculture producers and consumers, and it is essential that this gap be bridged. This lack of education regarding agriculture is most certainly an important topic.

After all, three times a day, every single day, we make a decision based on agriculture.
