C.B.N. stu­dents ex­cel at Skills Canada com­pe­ti­tion in St. John’s

Eight stu­dents rep­re­sent­ing schools in the Con­cep­tion Bay North area earned medals at the Skills Canada In­ter­me­di­ate Chal­lenge.

Held Nov 26 at Col­lege of the North At­lantic’s Prince Philip Drive Cam­pus in St. John’s, the chal­lenge fea­tured close to 400 ju­nior high stu­dents com­pet­ing in 17 trade, tech­nol­ogy and em­ploy­a­bil­ity events.

Car­bon­ear Academy’s Kyle Short and Ni­cholas Nowak tied with an­other duo to claim gold in the 3D com­puter animation com­pe­ti­tion. In the 2D event, Cahley War­ren and Cyan Martin of Car­bon­ear Col­le­giate also tied with an­other two-per­son team to claim gold.

Three stu­dents from Holy Rede­meer in Spa­niard’s Bay claimed medals. Abi­gail Gal­way walked away with gold in graphic de­sign, while Mitchell Bar­rett and Kira Piercey claimed sil­ver in the IT net­work sys­tems scav­enger hunt.

Round­ing out the lo­cal medal­ists was Ha­ley Somers, a Car­bon­ear Col­le­giate stu­dent who earned bronze in the IT of­fice soft­ware so­lu­tions for busi­ness event.

The gold medal­ists ad­vance to the Skills Canada Provin­cial Com­pe­ti­tion next April to com­pete against high school stu­dents.
