- Passed peace­fully away at the Car­bon­ear Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal on Satur­day, De­cem­ber 10, 2016, Dawn E. Butt of Har­bour Grace, age 51 years. Pre­de­ceased by her father: Jeremiah Haire. Left to mourn, hus­band: Peter; one daugh­ter: Emily; one son: Kyle; three step-daugh­ters: Kee­ley, Sha­lynn, and Jaimee; mother: Alice Haire, Har­bour Grace; one brother: Jerry (Trudy) Haire, Har­bour Grace; three sis­ters: Michelle (Dave) Brett, Fogo Is­land, Jackie (Wade) Luff­man, and Danette (Dave) Slade, both of Har­bour Grace; a num­ber of nieces, neph­ews and a large num­ber of other rel­a­tives and friends. The fam­ily re­ceived rel­a­tives and friends at Noel’s Fu­neral Home, Har­vey Street, Har­bour Grace. Father Em­manuel Osuagwu con­ducted the Fu­neral Mass on Thurs­day, De­cem­ber 15 at St. Joseph’s Ro­man Catholic Church, River­head, Har­bour Grace. BUTT, Dawn E. OSWEGO, NY – Martha El­iz­a­beth Gor­ton,

77, a res­i­dent of Scriba, passed away on Mon­day De­cem­ber 5, 2016, at her home. Born in Ne­wark Val­ley, NY, on June 20, 1939, she was a daugh­ter of the late Don­ald and Sylvia (Beers) Mackey. She grad­u­ated from the Ne­wark Val­ley High School in 1957. Martha was em­ployed with the J.P. New­berry’s Depart­ment Store in Owego and the United States Post Of­fice in Rich­ford NY. She was a res­i­dent of the Oswego area for 35 years. She bred, showed and trained New­found­land dogs for many years. She trav­eled through­out the North­east and Mid­west at­tend­ing sem­i­nars and ed­u­cat­ing the gen­eral pub­lic about the New­found­land breed. In 1997, she was part of the New­found­land Breed Honor Guard that met Queen El­iz­a­beth in St. Johns, New­found­land. She vol­un­teered for the ARC of Oswego, as well as many lo­cal schools and var­i­ous fes­ti­vals ed­u­cat­ing the pub­lic about what she con­sid­ered her breed, the New­found­land. She was a mem­ber of the Ge­ne­see Re­gion New­found­land Club and New­found­land Club of Amer­ica. She was an avid mo­tor­cy­clist be­gin­ning in the mid-1960s be­fore many women rode, she even had her own mo­tor­cy­cle. In 1986, she and her hus­band rode their mo­tor­cy­cles to Fair­banks, Alaska, and back home to Oswego. She en­joyed snow­mo­bil­ing, boat­ing, fish­ing, quilt­ing, knit­ting, gar­den­ing and craft­ing. She was a mu­si­cian that loved to sing, play the pi­ano, or­gan, drums or auto harp. She was a free­lance writer for sev­eral publi­ca­tions at her sum­mer home in Is­ling­ton, New­found­land where she en­joyed the lo­cal mu­sic and cul­ture.

She loved to travel, most re­cently vis­it­ing Brazil in South Amer­ica with a close friend. She was a lov­ing wife, mother and grand­mother and aunt. She is sur­vived by her hus­band of 57 years, LeRoy Gor­ton of Oswego; her son, Leo (Cathy) Gor­ton of Oswego; two grand­chil­dren, Leo and Caitlin Gor­ton; a sis­ter, Cindy Wilkowski of Hum­ble, Texas; a sis­ter-in-law, Linda Mackey of St. Johns, New­found­land; and nieces and neph­ews, Don Wil­mot, Ed Wil­mot, Jennifer Mackey, Con­nor Mackey and Caro­line Mackey. She was pre­de­ceased by her broth­erå, Roger Mackey.

Left to mourn, two daugh­ters: Thelma (Alex) Har­ris, Har­bour Grace and Roxan (Danny) Cromwell, Syd­ney, NS; three sons: Gre­gory, Gary, and Ken­neth (Kathy), all of Har­bour Grace; a large num­ber of grand­chil­dren and great-grand­chil­dren, nieces and neph­ews; brother: Gor­don, Har­bour Grace; sis­ters-in law: Anita Mor­gan and Rose (Wil­son) Downey, both of Har­bour Grace; brother-in-law: Ger­ald Ge­orge, Kel­li­grews; also a large num­ber of other rel­a­tives and friends. Rested at Noel’s Fu­neral Home, Har­vey Street, Har­bour Grace. Rev. Nancy Mo­jica-Fisher con­ducted the fu­neral ser­vice on Mon­day, De­cem­ber 12 at Cough­lan United Church, Har­bour Grace.
