Fewer than half of N.L.ers support Muskrat Falls: poll

Support for the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project has declined in the past six months, according to the most recent survey conducted by Corporate Research Associates Inc. (CRA).

Just under one-half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents (45 per cent, down from 54 per cent in May 2016) completely or mostly support the Muskrat Falls development, while almost onehalf (48 per cent, up from 35 per cent) mostly or completely oppose it, and seven per cent either do not know or did not offer an opinion on the matter (down from 11 per cent).

This is the first time since tracking began in 2013 that the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project is not supported by a majority of residents, CRA stated in a news release.

“Given the continuing escalation in the cost of Muskrat Falls, and negative public statements from Nalcor’s CEO, it is hardly surprising that support for this project would be declining,” said Don Mills, chairman and CEO of Corporate Research Associates.

These results are part of the CRA Atlantic Quarterly, an independent telephone survey of Atlantic Canadians, and are based on a sample of 401 adult Newfoundland and Labrador residents. The survey was conducted from Nov. 8 to Dec. 1, with overall results for the province accurate to within plus or minus 4.9 percentage points 95 times out of 100.
