Suggestions for boosting the economy

The Compass - - Editorial - — Jack O’Keefe writes from Conception Bay South

With all the talk about the budget there is little emphasis on the matter of economic development and what the government is doing to stimulate the economy.

I would like to suggest that the government needs to do something with Wabush Mines, and I suggest that instead of offering hundreds of millions to someone to come in and take over Wabush Mines, the government should form its own Newfoundland com- pany to own and run it. Also, as part of this plan, they should investigate the potential of building a steel plant in Newfoundland to take the raw product from Wabush and turn it into steel products, such as steel plate, steel pipe, etc. Argentia would be a good location to build this plant as it has an excellent harbour, existing wharf facilities and lots of land, and it is generally ice-free.

This would lead to other de- velopments such as building our own ferries which, as we know, we are currently getting built in other countries. Existing shipbuilding facilities, including those in Marystown and Bull Arm, should be included in this strategy. We have the workforce with the necessary skills, we just do not have the opportunities.
