Accessible van game changer for young family

The Tucker family in Bay Roberts has a lot to be thankful for these days, as the generosity of others is making their life a bit easier.

Harris and Lisa Tucker’s threeyear-old daughter Lauren is diagnosed with cerebral palsy. In order to attend frequent medical appointments at the Janeway Children’s Hospital in St. John’s, the Tuckers need a wheelchair accessible van. These specialized vehicles cost tens-of-thousands of dollars.

Now, the Tuckers have a 2015 wheelchair accessible Dodge Caravan. The President’s Choice Children’s Charity covered approximately half its cost through a $20,000 donation, and other local businesses and individuals pitched in with the rest. According to Lisa, they managed to surpass the goal of raising an additional $20,000, meaning the Tuckers can also cover registration and insurance for the van and purchase mobility aids and costly physiotherapy equipment.

“Thank you seems insufficient, but from the bottom of our hearts, we realize the blessing it is to be part of such a compassionate community of family, friends and yes, even strangers who have banded together in support of our family,” Lisa told The Compass in an email, noting too the whole experience brings to mind the African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child.”

“Alone, our van would still be a dream,” she said. “Because of Lauren’s village’s investment in raising a child, the African proverb came true, once again, and the dream has become an amazing reality!”
