Bay Roberts players aid Bishop’s College School in championship victory
BCS Bears win the James McCreath championship for the first time
The Bishop’s College School’s (BCS) under-18 varsity hockey team in Quebec took Zachary Bennett and Dawson Mercer, both originally from Bay Roberts, under their wing over the past two years.
Bennett plays defence for the team, while Mercer plays forward. Both Bennett and Mercer are cousins, having grown up in Bay Roberts before moving to Quebec to attend BCS.
This week, the Bears, with the help of Mercer and Bennett, managed to capture the National Independent School Invitational Championship.
The Bears entered the tournament ranked fifth, but worked their way through the opposition, beating topranked St. Andrews College in the semi-finals 3-2 in overtime.
This brought BCS to the finals for the very first time, where they shared the ice with Upper Canada College. The game saw BCS demonstrate impressive determination right up to the end, finishing the game 3-0, and winning them the NISIC championship.
Vincent Duplessis of Quebec City, BCS’ goalie, was named MVP of the James McCreath tournament.
