Bay Roberts swimmer named to Canada Games team
Poseidon teammates medal at Mount Pearl meet
Alex Neil of Bay Roberts recently earned the right to represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2017 Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg. The 14-year-old Poseidon swimmer also had a great meet at the provincial short-course championships, which were held in Mount Pearl.
A member of the Poseidon Swim Club of Carbonear will represent Newfoundland and Labrador at the 2017 Canada Games in Winnipeg.
Alex Neil of Bay Roberts was named to the team following the provincial shortcourse championships, held March 24-26 in Mount Pearl.
The 14-year-old claimed two silver medals at the meet in girls 14-andunder 50-metre and 100-metre butterfly events.
She also qualified for finals in the 50-m freestyle and 200-m individual medley events, finishing sixth and fourth respectively.
Allison Somers of Carbonear also had a good meet, claiming gold medals in girls 15-and-over 100-m butterfly and 200-m butterfly events.
She qualified for finals in three other events: 50-m freestyle (fifth), 400-m freestyle (sixth) and 50-m butterfly (seventh).
Poseidon’s Sarah Forward also fared well at the meet, qualifying for girls 14-and-under finals in 200-m freestyle (eighth) and 400-m individual medley (sixth).
Mackenzie Sutton finished sixth in the final for girls 14-and-under 50-m backstroke.
Eight Poseidon swimmers in all qualified to compete at the meet in Mount Pearl. Poseidon was scheduled attend an invitational meet in Gander this past weekend, but it was cancelled due to weather.
