The Town of Carbonear is looking to set up eight blue-zone parking spaces on Water Street between O’Donovan’s Lane and Church Street.

The Town of Carbonear is looking to enhance accessibility to the downtown area by establishing eight blue-zone parking spaces on Water Street.

The eight blue-zone spaces for people with disabilities will be spread out between O’Donovan’s Lane and Church Street, with four per side along Water Street.

The motion to establish bluezone parking spaces was approved at the March 21 council meeting.

Coun. Ed Goff expressed some reservations about the move, mentioning the area around the post office is already fairly congested, with a crosswalk and fire

hydrant also taking up some curb space.

“I know demographics are changing and we need more blue zones — that’s recognized,” he said at the meeting. “But I think we have to have a bit more thought put into where we have the walkways and the yellow zones as well around some of these areas.”

The portion of Water Street in questions covers approximately 700 metres.

The town was looking at placing the blue-zone spaces near intersections and crosswalks to best serve the needs of people with disabilities, according to chief administrative officer Cynthia Davis.

Coun. Ray Noel, not feeling there was a need to avoid approving the blue-zone space, did agree it would be worthwhile to speak with Tract Consulting, the group handling the town’s downtown revitalization study, and discuss locations further with the public works department. Coun. David Kennedy agreed.

“Two weeks time we’re back here again,” he said. “You’re not going to paint it in two weeks anyway.”

Tract Consulting representatives were scheduled to meet with the town for a presentation on the study last week.
