Amalgamated Academy awarded with first Anderson-McCarthy Shield
Junior high school hockey was alive at the Danny Cleary Harbour Grace Community Centre on April 7th to the 10th as the arena held the inaugural Anderson–McCarthy Shield. The Shield will be awarded each year to the winner of the CBN Junior High tournament or series winner.
It is hoped that future years will see a tournament of all Junior High Schools in the area. The 2016-2017 Shield was awarded to Amalgamated Academy after the Jaguars nipped Carbonear Collegiate in the best two out of three series. Amalgamated won the championship with a 5-3 win in the third and deciding game in the best two out of three series Monday, April 10th. Carbonear had won the first game 5-2 Friday, April 7th; Amalgamated won game two 5-2 on Saturday, April 8th.
The Shield was in honor of two prominent retired schoolteachers from the Conception Bay North area, Leeland Anderson and Garry McCarthy.
Anderson has long been recognized and acknowledged as having a very influential teaching career, with the majority spent at Persalvic School in Victoria. As a teacher, Mr. Anderson selflessly gave so very much of his talents and time for the betterment of our youth, a highlight that many of his former students will acknowledge. He was an inspirational educator, dedicated coach and community youth organizer. A man whose decency, integrity and enthusiasm have, in turn, inspired so very many. He coached every sport valued so highly in our culture, in addition to introducing students to non-traditional sports with focus characterbuilding in healthy competition.
McCarthy was a leader in every aspect of sport upon his return as teacher to Harbour Grace in 1983 and until his retirement in 2010. He was an athlete, coach, chaperone and manager. Willing to share his love of hockey with others and to follow the example of his own mentor, Dick Power, McCarthy undertook the role of hockey coach of many school’s teams during his impressive teaching career. A fierce competitor, true sportsman and charismatic leader, McCarthy instilled the important individual characteristics of commitment, perseverance and sportsmanship in his students during all school and sporting events. Mr. McCarthy remains an inspiration to his many former students, colleagues and other coaches because of his generous and exemplary dedication to the game of hockey.
