Local Knights of Colum­bus re­ceives pro­vin­cial recog­ni­tion

A local Knights of Colum­bus group re­cently re­ceived some pro­vin­cial hon­ours.

Mon­signor McCarthy Coun­cil 5902 of Car­bon­ear re­ceived six awards at the 99th State Con­ven­tion of the

Knights of Colum­bus in the ju­ris­dic­tion of New­found­land and Labrador, held April 28-30 in Gan­der.

One of 36 ac­tive coun­cils in the prov­ince, it re­ceived the Com­mu­nity Ser­vice Award, Church Ser­vice Award, Coun­cil Ac­tiv­ity Award, Fam­ily Ser­vice Award, Youth Ser­vice Award and Cul­ture of Life Award. The group’s ser­vice pro­gram en­tries for the lat­ter five awards al­lows Mon­signor McCarthy Coun­cil 5902 to be con­sid­ered for Supreme Coun­cil awards later this year.

In ad­di­tion to those awards, Joe Har­ring­ton was named Knight of the Year for New­found­land and Labrador.

“Thanks to all the Knights and Ladies who have con­trib­uted to the great ser­vice pro­grams put on by our Coun­cil dur­ing the past year,” Grand Knight Phil Hur­ley wrote in an email to The Com­pass.

“Th­ese pro­grams are what make our Coun­cil great and give us recog­ni­tion, and pro­mote growth in the Knights of Colum­bus.”

This past year, Mon­signor McCarthy Coun­cil 5902 was in­volved in a va­ri­ety of projects, in­clud­ing food bank donations, coat donations for chil­dren, Spe­cial Olympics in­volve­ment, movie nights, a gar­den party, a pro­ject to keep Je­sus Christ front-and-cen­tre in Christ­mas, amongst other en­deav­ours.
