Local Knights of Columbus receives provincial recognition
A local Knights of Columbus group recently received some provincial honours.
Monsignor McCarthy Council 5902 of Carbonear received six awards at the 99th State Convention of the
Knights of Columbus in the jurisdiction of Newfoundland and Labrador, held April 28-30 in Gander.
One of 36 active councils in the province, it received the Community Service Award, Church Service Award, Council Activity Award, Family Service Award, Youth Service Award and Culture of Life Award. The group’s service program entries for the latter five awards allows Monsignor McCarthy Council 5902 to be considered for Supreme Council awards later this year.
In addition to those awards, Joe Harrington was named Knight of the Year for Newfoundland and Labrador.
“Thanks to all the Knights and Ladies who have contributed to the great service programs put on by our Council during the past year,” Grand Knight Phil Hurley wrote in an email to The Compass.
“These programs are what make our Council great and give us recognition, and promote growth in the Knights of Columbus.”
This past year, Monsignor McCarthy Council 5902 was involved in a variety of projects, including food bank donations, coat donations for children, Special Olympics involvement, movie nights, a garden party, a project to keep Jesus Christ front-and-centre in Christmas, amongst other endeavours.
