Heart’s Con­tent Re­gional Cen­tre for the Arts grand open­ing

The Heart’s Con­tent Mizzen Her­itage So­ci­ety will hold the grand open­ing of the Heart’s Con­tent Re­gional Cen­tre for the Arts June 17-18. An of­fi­cial open­ing cer­e­mony takes place 2 p.m. June 17 with spe­cial guests and a per­for­mance by the Ce­leste choir. At 8 p.m. New­found­land folk group The Once will per­form. June 18 the cen­tre will host Ties to the Avalon, an art ex­hi­bi­tion and sale fea­tur­ing lo­cal and re­gional artists and open to the gen­eral pub­lic free of charge. Car­bon­ear Memo­rial Day Pa­rade

Any mem­bers of the Car­bon­ear Le­gion that wish to take part in the July 1st pa­rade are asked to be at the Le­gion that day by 9:45 am to be bussed at 10 a.m. to the Sal­va­tion Army park­ing lot to form up for the Pa­rade at 10:30 a.m. The ser­vice will start at 11:50 a.m. at the Ceno­taph in Car­bon­ear. Holy Redeemer Grade 7 stu­dent Sam Bad­cock placed third provin­cially in the Turn­ing Points es­say com­pe­ti­tion. The Spa­niard’s Bay stu­dent was rec­og­nized for an es­say en­ti­tled “Can­cer.” That es­say will be pub­lished in a na­tional an­thol­ogy of stu­dent es­says later this sum­mer. Fred Hut­ton pre­sented the award to Sam June 1 at the Hiber­nia In­ter­pre­ta­tion Cen­tre in Manuels.
