Softball NL hands out awards to Placentia-area players
Two young softball players from the Placentia area were recently named the best-ofthe-best among junior athletes.
Brittany McCarthy from Placentia and Dunville’s Nick Pittman are Softball Newfoundland and Labrador’s junior female and male players of the year for 2016. They received their awards during the organization’s hall of fame ceremony May 12 in Conception Bay South.
McCarthy was a star for Team NL at the Under-21 Women’s Canadian Fastpitch Championships last year in Summerside, P.E.I., leading the team in hits (five), batting average (.385) and on base percentage (.429). She was also second in slugging percentage (.462).
At a local level, McCarthy was named the most outstanding player for the Diamonds team in the St. John’s Ladies Fastpitch League last season and was also the team’s co-captain. She was also a member of the Lafontaine Club Bud Light team from Placentia that claimed the 2016 Molson St. John’s Intermediate Softball championship.
Pittman was McCarthy’s teammate on Lafontaine Club Bud Light. His play earned him a spot on the all-league team for 2016. He had a hot bat at the Intermediate Men’s Fastpitch Provincial tournament in 2016, leading the way with a .700 batting average.
He helped the Kelly’s Pub Junior Canadians finish fourth at the Under-21 Men’s Canadian Fastpitch Championship in Tavistock, Ont. and also played at the Canadian Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championship as a member of NL2 WMC/The Bigs Bombers.
Two softball players from the Placentia area were recently declared the best junior players in the province for 2016. Nick Pittman and Brittany McCarthy were named the Softball Newfoundland and Labrador male and female junior players of the year during a ceremony held in Conception Bay South May 12.
