Soft­ball NL hands out awards to Pla­cen­tia-area play­ers

Two young soft­ball play­ers from the Pla­cen­tia area were re­cently named the best-ofthe-best among ju­nior ath­letes.

Brit­tany McCarthy from Pla­cen­tia and Dunville’s Nick Pittman are Soft­ball New­found­land and Labrador’s ju­nior fe­male and male play­ers of the year for 2016. They re­ceived their awards dur­ing the or­ga­ni­za­tion’s hall of fame cer­e­mony May 12 in Con­cep­tion Bay South.

McCarthy was a star for Team NL at the Un­der-21 Women’s Cana­dian Fast­pitch Cham­pi­onships last year in Sum­mer­side, P.E.I., lead­ing the team in hits (five), bat­ting av­er­age (.385) and on base per­cent­age (.429). She was also sec­ond in slug­ging per­cent­age (.462).

At a lo­cal level, McCarthy was named the most out­stand­ing player for the Di­a­monds team in the St. John’s Ladies Fast­pitch League last sea­son and was also the team’s co-cap­tain. She was also a mem­ber of the La­fontaine Club Bud Light team from Pla­cen­tia that claimed the 2016 Mol­son St. John’s In­ter­me­di­ate Soft­ball cham­pi­onship.

Pittman was McCarthy’s team­mate on La­fontaine Club Bud Light. His play earned him a spot on the all-league team for 2016. He had a hot bat at the In­ter­me­di­ate Men’s Fast­pitch Pro­vin­cial tour­na­ment in 2016, lead­ing the way with a .700 bat­ting av­er­age.

He helped the Kelly’s Pub Ju­nior Cana­di­ans fin­ish fourth at the Un­der-21 Men’s Cana­dian Fast­pitch Cham­pi­onship in Tav­i­s­tock, Ont. and also played at the Cana­dian Se­nior Men’s Fast­pitch Cham­pi­onship as a mem­ber of NL2 WMC/The Bigs Bombers.
