Almost half a dozen all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) were stolen last week in Carbonear and Victoria, according to Harbour Grace RCMP.

Staff Sgt. Harold Gale told The Compass one of the ATVs was abandoned after those who took it apparently had trouble starting it. Police have returned it to the owner.

It’s not unusual. It’s all across the province, really. — Staff Sgt. Howard Gale

“I guess they tried to start it, couldn’t get it started, and just left it,” Gale said, adding there was some damage to the ignition.

A search warrant was also executed in Tors Cove, which led to the recovery of more ATVs. At least one of the ATVs stolen last week was subsequently found in the woods near Lady Lake Road in Harbour Grace.

According to Gale, these sorts of cases come and go.

“There will be a rash of these types of things, and we’ll find out who is responsible and charge them, and then it will stop. It’s not unusual. It’s all across the province, really.”

Gale would advise residents to take extra precautions when it comes to storing such vehicles.

“You’ll want to keep the ATVs secured, keep them in a locked building, and don’t make it too easy. Don’t leave the key with them. Take the key with you. And if it does happen to be stolen, it would be nice if you knew your serial number. It may help us to recover it at some point in time.”

If indoor storage is not an option, Gale recommends chaining an ATV to an immobile object.

Anyone with information about the stolen ATVs can contact Harbour Grace RCMP at 709-596-5014 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
