Bay Roberts get busy again with Su­per Sports Week­end

BAY ROBERTS, NL — Balls were hit, laps were swam, run­ners raced and good times were had as Bay Roberts hosted hun­dreds of ath­letes for its an­nual Su­per Sports Week­end.

Ac­cord­ing to Coun. Dean Franey, the town’s recre­ation com­mit­tee chair­per­son, an es­ti­mated 765 peo­ple took part July 14-16, not in­clud­ing spec­ta­tors who were out and about to cheer on their loved ones in sports like ball hockey, swim­ming, softball and vol­ley­ball.

“Based on sports tourism num­bers … you’re look­ing at $200,000 to $300,000 a day was pumped into the re­gion,” he said, not­ing ball fields in Har­bour Grace and Up­per Is­land Cove were used, with Har­bour Grace’s arena also host­ing some games of ball hockey.

Softball fea­tured 15 teams on three fields, with lo­cals Mor­row, Mor­row & Cros­bie and Eco­foam win­ning the A and B di­vi­sions re­spec­tively.

The 10-kilo­me­tre Carved By The Sea road race fea­tured 68 run­ners, and the women’s vol­ley­ball tour­na­ment at As­cen­sion Col­le­giate at­tracted 10 teams. Mary Browns Bay Roberts won over a team from Bon­av­ista in that event.

For the un­der-11 and un­der13 provin­cial ball hockey tour­na­ments, there were an Ri­ley Meadus comes around a cor­ner dur­ing the 2017 Carved By The Sea 10-kilo­me­tre road race. es­ti­mated 200 spec­ta­tors per game, which kept the Bay Arena can­teen busy as well.

“One of the ladies I work with, her son played, and she came into my of­fice to­day and she told me that that tour­na­ment at the Bay Arena … was the best run tour­na­ment they’ve ever been to,” Franey said. “So ku­dos to the or­ga­niz­ers of that tour­na­ment at the Bay Arena.”

The swim meet in­cluded teams from Bay Roberts, Clarenville, Marys­town and Grand Bank, with 190 swim­mers reg­is­tered.

The Bay Roberts Sea Lions hosted a swim meet for Su­per Sports Week­end.


Eco­foam out of Bay Roberts were B-di­vi­sion champs for Su­per Sports Week­end in softball.

There was plenty of vol­ley­ball ac­tion at the gym­na­sium of As­cen­sion Col­le­giate for Su­per Sports Week­end.

The softball A-di­vi­sion champs for Su­per Sports Week­end were Mor­row, Mor­row & Cros­bie.

Bay Arena hosted two provin­cial ball hockey tour­na­ments dur­ing Su­per Sports Week­end.
