Carbonear under-14 softball earns first provincial banner in 20 years
Team headed to eastern championship in Fredricton in August
CARBONEAR, NL — Carbonear experienced a string of success during the recent Softball NL U14 Provincials in Bay Bulls.
The tournament, hosted by the Southern Shore Minor Softball Association on July 21-23 had eleven teams participate, but the Carbonear Islanders Pee Wee Boys fast pitch team came out on top after a streak of wins over the weekend.
In the semi-final the Islanders defeated Kelly’s Park Softball Association before defeating the Goulds in the championship game at the Bay Bulls complex.
The Islanders’ strong pitching and timely hitting won them the championship game, bringing home Carbonear’s first provincial banner in 20 years.
After winning the championship, the undefeated team from Carbonear has the opportunity to represent Newfoundland at the Eastern Canadian Softball Championships in Fredricton, N.B. on Aug. 24-27.
Carbonear slid through the round robin with wins over Bay Roberts, Southern Shore # 1, Conception Bay Central #1 and the Goulds.
The 11 teams that took part in the provincial tournament represented the Southern Shore, Carbonear, Bay Roberts, Conception Bay Central, Placentia, Shea Heights, Butlerville, Goulds, and Kelly’s Park Softball Association.
