Harbour Grace is looking to increase the number of visitors and general tourism to the area with the help of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency.

On Friday afternoon, Aug. 11, Ken McDonald, Member of Parliament for Avalon, announced a $150,000 investment from ACOA’s innovative communities fund for the town’s project. Alongside this, MHA Pam Parsons followed up with an announcement for $37,000 in provincial funding.

“Today’s announcement will assist the town of Harbour Grace with developing assets linked to tourism and increase economic opportunities in the area,” said Chris Mitchelmore, minister of Tourism, Culture, Industry, and Innovation in a news release. “Through partnerships, our government will continue to support the growth of the tourism industry and help achieve the provincial goal of $1.6 billion annually in resident and non-resident visitor spending by 2020.”

The investments announced aim to aid the community with several projects to increase tourism. The ultimate goal is to make Harbour Grace a more tourist-friendly destination.

The announcement, which took place in the town hall, saw the entirety of the Harbour Grace council, including Mayor Terry Barnes, in attendance. Barnes was very pleased with the announcement.

“Tourism is one of the top ways that we can increase our economic stability through outside investment,” said Barnes. “We look forward to partnering with ACOA and the provincial government, and seeing our town come to life through this project.”

Aspects of this project include trail development, directional signage, interpretative panels, aimprovements to the downtown area of the community, website improvements, as well as a smartphone app.

“Tourism supports a significant number of jobs in communities across Canada, and the government is committed to promoting increased tourism, as well as community development in the region,” said McDonald. “It supports our small businesses, and creates jobs in both rural and urban areas, including here in Harbour Grace.”

Mayor Terry Barnes said he looks forward to the effects this project will have on the town.
