Bay Roberts girls’ softball bring home provincial title
Go undefeated in six games at Avondale tournament
Players and coaches from the Bay Roberts under-12 Girls Squirt team had a good reason to celebrate after coming home from Avondale with a provincial title.
A group of young female softball players from Bay Roberts were dominant on the field earlier this month.
Having won every game played prior to the championship final on Sunday, Aug. 20, the Bay Roberts under-12 Squirt team defeated Conception Bay Central 12-5. The win gave the girls a Softball Newfoundland and Labrador provincial slo-pitch title.
“The girls were totally dominant in terms of pitching, hitting, fielding, and they ended up being the team to beat and proved in the end that no one was going to beat them,” said Chris Foley, treasurer of Bay Roberts Minor Softball.
It’s not a win we take for granted. It’s just great that it happened.

Playing in a seven-team tournament, Bay Roberts notched six wins in a convincing fashion, outscoring opponents 75-33. The biggest challenge among those six games came in the semis. Bay Roberts squeaked out a victory in that game against Kelly Park Sports Association of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove 17-14.
The strong results Aug. 18-20 came a week after many of the same girls played in the under12 fast pitch provincials, which were also in Avondale. The team went 1-4 in that tournament, losing in the semi-final round to the Kelly Park Sports Association 17-10.
“They were really mature for 12 years of age and unbelievable, the way they handled the pressure, especially from the pitchers we had,” said Foley, whose 10-year-old daughter Lauren also suited up for the team. “It was just a really highenergy weekend, and the girls didn’t let the previous weekend get them down. They just went out there and performed every game. Their parents were, of course, super proud of them. And, of course, Bay Roberts Minor Softball was super proud.”
According to Foley, this could be the first provincial title for a girls’ team from the Bay Roberts minor program since the 1980s.
“It’s not a win we take for granted,” he said. “It’s just great that it happened.”
Some players from the under12 girls team were scheduled to travel to Clarenville this past weekend for a mixed tournament. Two mite teams from Bay Roberts Minor Softball were also set to join other local associations in Carbonear for what was billed as a “Funtastic” tournament. All players involved would receive medals at the event.
