Ed­u­ca­tor earns teach­ing award from MUN

A teacher from Bay Roberts re­cently re­ceived an award from Memo­rial Univer­sity rec­og­niz­ing his com­mit­ment to the pro­fes­sion.

Jerome De­laney re­ceived a MUN Fac­ulty of Ed­u­ca­tion Dean’s Award for Ex­cel­lence in Teach­ing. He has worked as an as­so­ciate pro­fes­sor with the fac­ulty for 14 years.

De­laney was rec­og­nized as “an ap­proach­able, in­spir­ing ed­u­ca­tor who con­nects with stu­dents” who also mo­ti­vates them to learn and cre­ates a “pos­i­tive learn­ing en­vi­ron­ment,” ac­cord­ing to an in­scrip­tion on a plaque pre­sented to the Bay Roberts na­tive.

Be­yond teach­ing with the fac­ulty, he’s re­spon­si­ble for The Mon­day eMemo, which com­bines prac­ti­cal in­for­ma­tion with hu­mour. It tran­si­tioned to a blog for­mat ear­lier this year. He has also worked on text­books and his lat­est, “The Un­der­grad­u­ate Teach­ing In­tern­ship: Stu­dent Per­spec­tives,” is due for pub­li­ca­tion next year.

Prior to teach­ing at MUN, De­laney spent 30 years in the K-12 sys­tem. He taught at St. Fran­cis High School in Har­bour Grace among other places, and spent 15 years as a prin­ci­pal at high schools across New­found­land.
