Over 200 Persalvic Elementary students spent part of last Wednesday walking laps around the school.

The K-8 school, which includes students from communities such as Victoria, Salmon Cove, and Perry’s Cove, had students of all ages take part in the TD Walk to Breakfast Wednesday morning, Oct. 4. The Walk, which is a part of Kids Eat Smart week, gives schools the opportunity to raise funds, or collect food donations, for their KES Clubs, which provide breakfast programs for schools across the province.

Nickie Shanks, regional coordinator for the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, told The Compass the entire week involves various activities students can take part in, which all promote healthy eating.

“It’s not really just confined to this one week – we have schools in our area that are doing walks later this month, as well,” said Shanks. “But the main idea is to do them early in the school year, so October is ideal, to really get the kids into the idea of what Kids Eat Smart offers, and hopefully drive that point before the school year gets too busy.”

This year, the TD Walk to Breakfast was joined together with the Dana Cox Memorial Walk to Breakfast, giving students and staff a chance to participate in both walks at the same time.

Cox, a substitute teacher at Persalvic Elementary, passed away in 2016. She was known to play an active role in the breakfast program at the school, and is well remembered by both students and staff at Persalvic. This marks the second year for the walk to take place.

After the walk, students were treated to a pancake breakfast in the gym before heading back to class.

Students and staff at Persalvic Elementary took part in the TD Walk to Breakfast, alongside the Dana Cox Memorial Walk to Breakfast, on Wednesday morning, Oct. 4.

Persalvic Elementary’s mascot made an appearance Wednesday morning to encourage the young walkers.
