C.B.N. skaters claim two gold medals
Two skaters from the Conception Bay North area earned gold medals at the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Deer Lake.
Competing in STAR 6, Laura Keefe of Bay Roberts placed first out of 12 skaters to win gold for Team Avalon. Upper Island Cove’s Chloe Seymour was the other gold medalist, competing in a field of 12 for Team Avalon in the STAR 5 13-and-over category.
Toni-Lynn Parsons and Jaide Russell from the Conception Bay North Skating Club and Claire Barron of the Trinity Placentia Figure Skating Club also skated for Team Avalon in Deer Lake. Parsons placed sixth in STAR 6, Russell was eighth in the Juvenile Women event and Barron was sixth in Pre-Novice Women.
Keefe, Parsons and Seymour will skate for Team Newfoundland and Labrador next month at Atlantics in Nova Scotia. Fellow CBN skater Sarah Dawson will join them there.
Michael Hiscock went the distance and pulled through when he needed to at the 2018 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games in Deer Lake.
The Bay Roberts native, representing Team Avalon, was the victor in a thrilling gold medal matchup that took five games to finish, with Hiscock coming out on top in the deciding match. Joshua Waterman from Team Central claimed silver.
Team Avalon was comprised entirely of players from the Conception Bay North Table Tennis Club. The female team — featuring Josephine Gruner, Sara Young, Emma Cleary and Sophie Hirschhäuser — managed to earn some additional hardware for the region, winning the bronze medal game. The boys team finished fourth.
In other individual results, Ben Ryan played in the under14 male bronze medal match but came out on the losing end of the final result, as did Hirschhäuser in under-17 female action.
For Hiscock, this is his third Winter Games gold medal in the sport. At the 2014 games in Clarenville, he won gold in the under-13 male event and also contributed to Avalon’s gold medal performance in the male team event. His older brother Nick, who was a coach for this year’s male team, was also a part of the golden group in 2014.
