The Trinity-Placentia Tee Pees were crowned the 2018 champions at the Atom C provincials April 7.

Jennifer Reid-Barrett’s son Jackson Barrett accepted the hardware as the team captain at the Danny Cleary Harbour Grace Community Centre last Saturday.

“It was a crazy close game,” Reid-Barrett, the team’s manager and co-ordinator, said. “We suffered our only loss to the Caribous in round robin action.”

The Tee-Pees bounced back in the championship game, defeating the Clarenville Caribous 6-5. Brody Harnum scored the winning goal to lift the Tee Pees to victory.

The Tee Pees’ win-loss record for the tournament was 5-1. The team netted 44 goals in total and allowed 31, resulting in a plus-minus differential of 13.

Jackson Barrett had 7 goals throughout the tournament.

“We worked really hard,” the captain said. “Our hard work paid off.”

Coach Dean Barrett was really proud of the entire team and said there is no “I” in team.

“These young hockey players are a really great coachable group of kids,” the coach said. “They get along great, on and off the ice.”

However, the trophy presented was too heavy for the young players’ team skate.

The host team, the Harbour Grace’s CeeBees, won the bronze with a record of 2-2-1, tallying 23 goals and letting in 18.

There was a minute of silence prior to the championship game in memory of the Humboldt Broncos, the junior hockey team involved in a fatal crash in Saskatchewan resulting in 15 deaths. Coaches, parents and players donned green ribbons on Saturday in support the #HumboldtStrong movement.
