Trinity Bay wrestlers medal at Wrestling Canada national championships
Jordan Pitcher wins gold, Owen Warren claims two silver medals in Edmonton
It’s the biggest tournament for that calibre in Canada.
EDMONTON, AB — Two wrestlers representing a club based in Whitbourne came through with outstanding results at the Wrestling Canada Under-17 Championships.
Jordan Pitcher of Norman’s Cove won gold in Greco-Roman wrestling, competing in the 65 kilos weight class. His teammate Owen Warren of Chapel Arm left the event with a pair of silver medals in the 110 kilos weight classes for Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling.
“I was screaming and crying a lot,” said Peter Petipas, coach of the Trinity Bay Wrestling Club, who watched their matches online from home.
Held April 13-15 in Edmonton, the under-17 and under19 championships were jointly held, with hundreds of young wrestlers from across Canada competing. Pitcher and Warren accompanied a team from Avondale on the trip to Alberta’s capital city.
“I knew they’d do good, but I didn’t know they’d do that good though, especially for their first time going up to it,” Petipas said. “Usually it takes a tournament or two to get your sea legs. It’s the biggest tournament for that calibre in Canada.”
Pitcher and Warren, both 15 years of age, placed first in competitions provincially and at the Atlantic regional level, and they compete as well for the Crescent Collegiate school team. Pitcher has wrestled for four years, while Warren was only introduced to the sport a year ago, just before the 2017 Canada Games. They were both members of Team Newfoundland and Labrador for that event.
