The premier of Newfoundland and Labrador was in Harbour Main on Monday morning, Aug. 6, to highlight joint federal-provincial spending on roads, water and wastewater infrastructure for towns on the Avalon Peninsula.

Joined by Avalon MP Ken McDonald and Harbour Main MHA Betty Parsley, Premier Dwight Ball spoke the need for such investments to ensure people living on the Avalon Peninsula enjoy a better quality of life.

“Through development of these projects, employment opportunities will be created in many communities, and small businesses and the tourism sector will benefit from developed infrastructure,” he said in a news release.

Nearly $6 million is being spent on 12 projects on the peninsula. Harbour Grace is benefiting substantially, with funds allocated to a pair of projects valued at over $2.6 million. One involves water and sewer upgrades for Kitchen’s Hill, while the other deals with water and sewer upgrades for Noad Street.

He stressed the importance of governments collaborating to address challenges facing municipalities such as his own. With provincial government support through the Municipal Capital Works Program, his town is currently getting help with upgrades to the Conran’s Road water main.

Doyle said infrastructure investments like the ones announced Monday help keep communities vibrant and stable.
