Kelowna to get advanced diagnostic scanner

The Daily Courier - - WESTSIDE WEEKLY -

The province’s third PET/CT scanner, the most advanced diagnostic tool available today, will be located in Kelowna.

BMO Financial Group has partnered with the B.C. Cancer Foundation to see the scanner installed at the B.C. Cancer Agency’s Sindi Ahluwalia Hawkins Centre for the Southern Interior. From now until Oct. 31, BMO Financial Group will match donations made toward the purchase of the PET/CT scanner, up to $500,000.

“At BMO, we believe in giving back to the communities where our customers and employees live,” says Steven Jensen, a regional vice-president of BMO Financial Group.

This year, more than 900 cancer patients across the Southern Interior will require a PET/CT scan. Currently, patients and their families have to travel to Vancouver, where both of the province’s two publicly funded scanners are located.

The scanner helps doctors make the most accurate diagnosis possible and provide the best treatment, says Dr. Ross Halperin of the Cancer Agency. Often, he says, it can save patients from unnecessary radiation treatment, survey and biopsies.

The matching gift opportunity is part of a broader campaign to double PET/CT capacity across the province. You can donate online at bccancerfounda
