Open burning starts today
Open burning will be allowed in the Kamloops Fire Centre, including the Central Okanagan, starting at 5 p.m. today.
Category 2 and Category 3 open fires will be allowed due to decreased wildfire risk in the region.
Under Regional District of Central Okanagan and local fire bylaws, open burning season can start as early as Oct. 1.
However, this year, Central Okanagan fire chiefs decided to postpone issuing permits until today because of elevated fire risks.
Eligible property owners in Ellison, Joe Rich, North Westside and Wilson’s Landing may call the regional district at 250-469-6223 to obtain a permit.
Before lighting any fire, property owners with a valid permit must call the outdoor burning hotline at 1-855262-2876 to determine if open burning is allowed on a particular day.
Campfires, sky lanterns, binary exploding targets, air curtain burners, fireworks, burning barrels and burning cages have been allowed in the Kamloops Fire Centre since Sept. 22.
