Open burn­ing starts to­day

Open burn­ing will be al­lowed in the Kam­loops Fire Cen­tre, in­clud­ing the Cen­tral Okana­gan, start­ing at 5 p.m. to­day.

Cat­e­gory 2 and Cat­e­gory 3 open fires will be al­lowed due to de­creased wild­fire risk in the re­gion.

Un­der Re­gional District of Cen­tral Okana­gan and lo­cal fire by­laws, open burn­ing sea­son can start as early as Oct. 1.

How­ever, this year, Cen­tral Okana­gan fire chiefs de­cided to post­pone is­su­ing per­mits un­til to­day be­cause of el­e­vated fire risks.

El­i­gi­ble prop­erty own­ers in El­li­son, Joe Rich, North West­side and Wil­son’s Land­ing may call the re­gional district at 250-469-6223 to ob­tain a per­mit.

Be­fore light­ing any fire, prop­erty own­ers with a valid per­mit must call the out­door burn­ing hot­line at 1-855262-2876 to de­ter­mine if open burn­ing is al­lowed on a par­tic­u­lar day.

Camp­fires, sky lan­terns, bi­nary ex­plod­ing tar­gets, air cur­tain burn­ers, fire­works, burn­ing bar­rels and burn­ing cages have been al­lowed in the Kam­loops Fire Cen­tre since Sept. 22.
